The old shop

Back list

This house was the shop of a trader or craftsman dating from the late 15th or 16th century.

It is built entirely from granite taken from quarries in Ramatuelle. It would probably have had a wooden stall to display the products on sale, and a shutter which could be pulled down to close it up. The segmental arch on decorative coussinets would have included an openwork tympanum, made from wood or plaster, to admit light. The raised threshold prevented rainwater from entering in the event of a storm, and served above all to protect the interior of the house from street refuse and sewage.
