Stele of the Commandos

Historic site and monument

Rayol-Canadel-sur-Mer
Monument of the Commandos of Africa, in memory of the men who landed on the ground of Provence on August 15, 1944. It was inaugurated on August 15, 1945 during the first anniversary of the D-Day landings.
It was built in the first months of 1945, thanks to a public subscription and under the impulse of the Local Committee of Liberation.
Built in schist stone, it supports two marble plaques.
On the higher one, the emblem of the Commandos d'Afrique is engraved, with a map of France on which a crescent appears with a boat marked with the word COMMANDOS, surmounted by a mast with a sail bearing a five-pointed star.
Underneath, a plaque with this inscription:
Passing by, remember the volunteers of the Commandos d'Afrique group who were the first to land on French soil on August 14, 1944, at midnight, and whose bodies mark the path to liberation on this coast of Provence.
