All our visitors are familiar with the famous beaches of Pampelonne, Cavalaire, Gigaro and La Nartelle. But few have had the opportunity to explore our more out-of-the-way coves, such as Brouis, Bonporteau, Vergeron and Les Mimosas.

So as you can see, we've been working hard to make sure your holiday by the sea is tip top. Now all you have to do is sit back and unwind in the shade of the umbrella pines to the sound of chirping cicadas... Our natural scenery is simply stunning and we know you'll do everything to help us preserve it.

A long sandy beach with alternating private establishments (with restaurants and sun-beds) and public areas, where its possible to go pedal-boating or canoe-kayaking, or dive into the cristal waters from the offshore rafts. Children’s games. A footpath runs along the beach, away from the traffic. 2 life-guard stations. Very good for slalom water-ski-ing.

At the end of a gently sloping footpath (cycles authorised), a large wooded area of eucalyptus trees, tamarind bushes and wild palms, which opens onto a pretty, broad inlet surrounded by rocks. Unguarded sandy beach. Family orientated, with pic-nic tables.

This remarkable coastal site is now a protected nature reserve, and is in the process of being re-developed. Unlimited parking(well, nearly !). Sandy beach. Free volley-ball pitches. Life-guard station (manned during the Season). Animals forbidden (even on leash). Very good for slalom water-ski-ing.

Cogolin

This is a white penitent’s chapel built in the XIXth century (about 1830), near the Place Bellevue, overlooking the Golfe de St Tropez. The barn situated right is the chapel from XVIIth century, sold as national property during the French Revolution. In 1790, she was used many times as meeting place in order to elect the first republican council from the commune.

This is an old building, from middle XVth century, renovated in the XVIth century, she may cover an older building which she keeps some roman vestiges (chapelle de la Vierge). In 1550, she is etablished Saint Sauveur Etienne by Frejus’s bishop. Since 1984, contemporaries and locals artists as De Kock, Biabaud, Vento and Lemarquis make the building more attractive. A lot of elements come from La Chartreuse de la Verne.

The Marines de Cogolin, complex, situated 5 km from the village going towards Saint-Tropez on the RN 98 road, is built between the right bank of the Giscle river and the beach. It includes a 56-acre port, sandy beach and sailing centre. Port Cogolin, is a residential complex built around a marina, offering evening entertainment, restaurants and piano-bars.

This private museum exhibits a wealth of personal items belonging to Jules-Auguste-César Muraire, better known as Raimu. The many documents, posters, photos, manuscripts and letters on show retrace the memory of this immensely famous music hall performer and film and theatre actor, and evoke the world of the music hall during the first decades of the 20th century, with such famous names as Marcel Achard, Maurice Chevalier, Mistinguett and Marcel Pagnol. Visitors are welcomed by Raimu's grand-daughter Isabelle Nohain, who speaks of her grandfather with eloquence and intelligence. A very nice beach, planted with giant palm trees. Nearly unlimited parking, with a lovely view of St Tropez in the distance. Picnic tables, volley-ball pitches, snackbar, beverages, ice-creams etc. Lifeguards on duty between mid-June and mid-September. Public shower. Pets are not allowed, but you CAN come on your bike !

This small Romanesque chapel set in the middle of the woods was a parish church up to the mid-16th century. Located 500 metres to the North of the village, it is said to have been built after the Plague hit the area. There are 3 or 4 classical music concerts (piano, chorale society, etc)in july and august in this idyllic and rustic place.

Notre Dame de l’Assomption church, on the village square, was comple ted in 1558. The bell tower, which was built separately from the rest of the church, is probably the oldest section. The church formerly bore battlements, which were destroyed in 1793. It is home to the shrine of Saint-Laurent, the village's Patron Saint, a golden virgin and many paintings. A 16th century white marble font, decorated with 4 angel heads, plus a fragment of a Christ by the Spanish school can be admired in the sacristy. The modern cross was designed by Roger Roux in 1968.

Huddled up against the green hills of the village of Gassin, the beautiful private garden of Marie-Thérèse L’Hardy, a botanical fanatic, is quite surprising. With about 600 Mediterranean species for 2 495 m², the garden is open every day for free visit, alone with a map or with Marie-Thérèse as a guide. Located in the village of Gassin, near the Place Deï Barri, after the 5th hackberry tree coming from the Church, take the little stairs down to the garden. Tel. : 04.94.56.18.72

Set in the plain, in a quarter bearing the same name, this windmill was built in the 19th century. The tower is still standing. Access: Take the Route du Brost from the village - the windmill is located inside Verdagne campsite. Open all year round.

Situated less than 300 metres from Cavalaire town centre, in a little lane situated between the top of the cemetery and the road leading to Saint-Tropez, this ancient mill, still sporting its original tower, offers splendid views over the village.

In the shade of the bamboo, among the meanders of the Treizan, this is Gassin’s one and only developped beach, which is partly private, belonging to the Sailing Club. However, you are still very welcome to try this relaxed, sporty atmosphere.

Houses the shrines of Saint Théodore. A vault has been annexed as the burial place for the Penitent brothers. On the left-hand side, a 16th century inscription written in Provençal dialect and only deciphered in 1966 bears the words: Monseigneur de Fréjus granted 40 days of forgiveness.

Quartier Bagatin. Place of pilgrimage in August, this chapel, first mentioned in an early 11th-century charter, is home to a fine Louis XIV retable. The gold-leafed altarpiece and articulated statue of the Virgin have now been relocated to the parish church. The stolen statue was found in a well in 1900 - horses, donkeys and mules were traditionally blessed at the site on August 16th.

Listed monument dating back to the 11th century. The late 13th century fortified walls encircled part of the village and castle. Reworked in the 15th century, the castle was then destroyed during the Religious Wars. Rebuilt in the mid-17th century, it was abandoned after the French Revolution. Comprising a main building flagged by two towers, whose ruins reveal the three inner floors, this highly-fortified castle was protected by two walls, the largest of which was seven metres high. Today, just one more-or-less intact vaulted room remains.

A waterside village which emerged from the marshes in 1966, Port-Grimaud is a genuine architectural tour de force, signed by the famous 20th century architect François Spoerry. This Neo-Provençal style complex, with its Mediterranean atmosphere, stretches over 220 acres and includes about 2 000 houses. Visitors must leave their car at one of the fortified gates at the villages entrances and explore on foot or by boat. The village's tiny islands are linked by Venetian-style bridges, decorated with columns, old-fashioned lamp posts, trompel'oeil and a maze of arcades - especially around the more recent Place du Sud. A real aesthetic success which has since been reproduced in the United States.

You can climb to the top of the church to enjoy fine views over the waterside village, the Bay of Saint-Tropez and the Maures Hills.

late 12th - early 13th centuries Restored in 1964, the austerity and Medieval style of the chapel's central knave have now been restored. The inside of the chapel is shaped like a Latin cross. In the side chapel, the 16th century Carrara marble font bearing the inscription Presbit Monachus de Grimaldi, according to the legende, is said to have been offered by King René. The stained-glass windows are by Jacques Gautier (1975). Square bell tower, topped by an arrow and a lightning conductor (lightning has already fallen here twice...). Today's bells date back to 1866 and 1786.

Modern time aqueduct (XVIth or XVIIth century) which allowed, with a main and a siphon, to bring the Pancaou spring water, at about 3 km, until a fountain in the fairground. Exceptional work, unique of its kind in PACA region, to discover.

Built in the 17th century, this was the village's largest oil mill. Its remains can now be seen at the Musée des Arts et Traditions Populaires (folk museum).

Built in the 17th century, the flour mill was formerly called the Moulin de la Gardiole. It was fully restored and returned to full working order in 1990 by the architect Hubert Lemonier and the Compagnons du Tour de France. Access: from the castle car park (open in summer).

The museum has been established in an ancient olive-oil mill and a former cork factory; you will discover the history of the village and its region thanks to objects of the everyday life of the past and the restoration of a village apartment of the end of the 19th Century. Temporary exhibitions. Open from Monday to Saturday (and Sunday during school holidays). A nice little beach close to the car-park. Early in the morning.before the sun gets up, enjoy the intermingling pinks and blues of the dawn. When the wind blows from the East, it’s a super spot for body-boarding and surfing : the waves can reach a height of 3.5m in winter. Frontal waves, ideal for aerials and surfing in the foam, it can be difficult to get back to the beach, which is not very wide and surrounded by a breakwater. Fantastic views over Saint Tropez and the Citadelle.

At the end of the ‘Avenue de la Mer’, you can’t miss it ! You will see nothing but sand at the edge of the most beautiful gulf, this is the dream beach for little ones who will be able to learn to swim or go on the slides or the other games (from the age of 4). Pedalos, sailing school. Life-guard station in Summer. Relaxed, family atmosphere.

Now just how do you think it got this name ?!! With its tiny lighthouse, and basket-handle beach, this sandy beach is well-liked for its unique décor. Free access from the roadside. Not very big, but extremely agreeable – just opposite the most famous harbour in the Var county.

A wide stretch of sand, sheltered from the traffic and the nearby residences by a natural hedge of pine trees – one of which is very big ! No lifeguard on duty outside the Summer period. Dogs not allowed. Public shower and WC (payment necessary). Facilitated access for invalids (reserved parking and loan of wheelchair). Go along the breakwater to the left : a ‘greek temple’ lends another aspect to the beach.

Here, the only thing to do is to contemplate this wild Eden, a mosaic of landscapes and perfumes typical of the provençal shrubland. The view is stunning, and there is an infinite number of walks which will enable you to drink in the perfume of ‘Les Maures’. Too steep for bathing, the Cape is perfect for meditating on the ephemeral beauty of life on Earth.

Watch amazing picture-postcard sunsets from this spit of sand, with its large, family-orientated beach and its coastline rich with protected species of flora and fauna. Body-boarding possible when the East wind blows. A few restaurants. Continues onto a marine path which zigzags between the picturesque small rocky inlets.

Nestling between Cape Lardier and Cape Taillat, an edge of the Mediterranean which lends itself ideally to peaceful strolls along the waterside. It’s the only beach on this part of the peninsula which is bordered unexpectedly by a vineyard running down to the sea, whose turquoise waters also attracts the boats who come to cast anchor in its shelter. Fine sand, lapping waves, wall-to-wall sunshine : discover also the curious dolmens on the hillside.

The long stairway down the cliffs to the beach does not discourage the lovers of this wild coastline. Overhung by luxuriant vegetation, this peaceful haven is a lovely place to relax, where the picturesque rocks seem to grow right out of the ground. There is no shade – bring parasols and bottles of water !

Far from everything, lost at the end of the St Tropez peninsula, this small piece of wild terrain resembles an earthly paradise from times when only migratory birds and extraordinary flowers existed. Quite a few rocks in this quiet bay with its absolute calm, apart from the concert of chirping crickets whenever the temperature reaches 23°C !

Here, the white sand slopes gently into the transparent water: the beach is wide with plenty of room for beach-games. There is a car-park (with payment) 150m away. The private beach and restaurant still leaves plenty of space for public access along the water. Great spot for waves when the wind blows west /north-west, with waves reaching 2,5m at times. Beware of the rocks just beneath the surface to the left of this spot: it is better to stay at least 100m to the right of the beach entrance. If you don’t like swimming, you can go walking or climbing on the surrounding rocks.

Who would think that this charming beach was one of the sites of the WWII landings to liberate France in 1944 !!! An orientation table illustrates these movements. Free access. ‘Village’ atmosphere, with bars, restaurants and boutiques. Regular maritime shuttle in July & August, serving St Tropez, Porquerolles and Port-Cros (daily return service).

With its back to the cliffs, this small sheltered paradise is well worth a visit, although towel-space is limited. Everything is remarkable : the view, the site, the fauna and flora, the quality of the water and the landscape – but you have to be quite sporty to get here AND to climb back up again in the evening ! Don’t forget to bring a pic-nic and a parasol. The coastline is unguarded.

Forming a natural boundary between La Croix Valmer and Ramatuelle, a remarkable area perfumed by the essences of myrtle and rosemary, where the flora and fauna are protected, marvel at the heady gliding flights of the seagulls. Vestiges of Napoleonic remains. Unforgettable view, with the ‘Bastide Blanche’ at your feet ! Attention, this is fragile terrain : it is absolutely necessary to respect the guidelines posted on the information boards.

Situated on the road leading to Grimaud, this chapel was rebuilt in the 19th century and contains an interesting collec- tion of ex-votos reproductions proffered by followers whose lives are said to have been saved by divine intervention. Magnificent panoramic views over the Maures Hills and the sea.

You will discover this chapel on the way to the village from Grimaud. Take the small road winding down to the bottom of the hill, on the right just before La Garde-Freinet. The chapel, which combines simple Romanesque and contemporary styles, is known to date back to the Middle Ages. It was beautiful restored by the sculptor Di Teana.

The church is home to a very curious bust of a pope's reliquary, an 18th century baldachin polychrome marble altar and a listed painting (dated 1702), representing Saint-Bernard and Saint Jeanne de France kneeling at the feet of the Virgin Mary. The porch was reworked in 1789 in Renaissance style. The clock tower's superb ironwork dates back to 1875.

A listed monument, this stone settlement was built in the late 12th century; the inhabitants deserted it later for the current village of La Garde. In Medieval times, men carved houses, a chapel, a seigneurial residence and a wide moat in the rock an impressive show of skill. Legend tells that Fort Freinet was inhabited by Saracens, who were present in the region in the 10th century. However, archaeological digs undertaken in 1980 revealed no traces of these Spanish-Arab warriors. Access: either from the Tourist Office, Place de la Mairie car park, towards Aire de La Planète - signposted footpath, length 60 mins return. Or from La Croix des Maures car park - signposted footpath, length 40 mins return.
